Cornwall College's Solano Birch says he enjoys playing under Dr Dean Weatherly and is hoping that his presence at the home of the 2016 daCosta Cup champions will bring title success this year.

Birch, who along with Matthew Thorpe transferred to Cornwall College from Herbert Morrison Technical High School this summer, scored in his school's come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Garvey Maceo High School in their quarter-finals ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup match last Saturday.

Birch scored in the 10th minute, while Thorpe netted the winner in stoppage time.

"Winning a title in the first season at this school would be great and just a wonderful feeling," Birch told the WESTERN STAR.

With one game to go against Glenmuir at Jarrett Park today, the Weatherly-coached team are atop Group 4 in the quarter-finals on six points, three more than Garvey Maceo. The winner of the group will advance to the semi-finals.

Birch has given much credit to Weatherly for the manner in which he has guided the team.

In last Saturday's game, Ronaldo Wright gave Garvey Maceo the lead in the eighth minute, but not for long, as Birch equalised two minutes later. Just before halftime, Tyrique Henry gave Garvey Maceo the lead once more. However, Shavon McDonald found the equaliser once more for CC in the 53rd minute. Thorpe then found the winner in the third minute of stoppage time to ensure Cornwall College get maximum points and edge closer to the semi-finals.
