Shavar Thomas, coach of defending Red Stripe Premier League Champions Portmore United, said it is very important for his team to continue putting points on the board as they try to become back-to-back champions for the first time.

Portmore United, who have not lost a game since their opening fixture against Mount Pleasant Academy, were held to a 1-1 draw by The UWI on Sunday.

Despite the draw, Portmore still leads the standings with 14 points, one ahead of the Tivoli Gardens and Mount Pleasant.

"It is not often we draw, but we continue to put points on the board and that is very important for us," said Thomas.

"We take that ( registering a point) as a positive sign and move forward to this weekend game," he said.

"It is early stages in the season and we are taking it a game at a time. We are working on things that we see after every game and just try to improve."

Portmore had to dig deep to secure a draw against UWI after Fabian McCarthy had given the university men the lead in the 18th minute.

However, Rondee Smith netted the equaliser for Portmore in the 34th minute to give his team a share of the points.

Thomas added that his team started the game very shakily which resulted in them drawing the game against the UWI.

"We started out slow, but we picked it up in the second half and so we were able to draw the game," Thomas said.
