Jourdaine Fletcher, who last week transferred to newly promoted Red Stripe Premier League outfit Mount Pleasant Football Academy, said seeing his high school teammate Peter-Lee Vassell secure a MLS deal recently motivated his move from Montego Bay United (MBU).

Vassell and Fletcher announced themselves to the nation, when their linkage brought Cornwall College the daCosta Cup title in 2016. Since then, Vassell has become an integral part of the Reggae Boyz team, while Fletcher has struggled to carry on despite being first to get an opportunity with the national senior team.

Fletcher became the third player from MBU to move to Mount Pleasant, with his move coming less than just six months after he rejoined the team from the second city. Since then, the former Reggae Boy has only scored once. He, however, believes a change in environment and challenge will set his career alight again.

“Of course he (Vassell) was a big motivation. He always talks to me and says that I need to work harder, keep focus, believe and never give up,” Fletcher admitted. “My aim is to score some goals and see if I can get a big contract overseas like Peter-Lee Vassell.”

“Nothing was happening for me at MBU and I needed a new environment to pursue my career,” he added in explaining his move.

Fletcher believes too much was on him to deliver in an MBU team where everyone wasn’t pulling their weight.

“For this third round, I’m looking to score some goals. It’s hard for me to believe that a striker like me is on one goal so far. It was hard on me at MBU so that’s also why I moved. I need to get back in shape and start scoring,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher couldn’t add to his tally yesterday, but Mount Pleasant did get the better of MBU 2-0, with Daniel Green and Francois Swaby getting the goals.

The win moved Mount Pleasant (38 points) into fourth place ahead of UWI FC’s (36 points) game tonight against Cavalier (44 points), who for now are down in second place, following Portmore’s 2-0 away win over Humble Lion on the back of first-half goals from Ryan Wellington (4) and Andre Wilson (41).

Arnett Gardens’ 2-1 win over Reno moved them to fifth place for now on 37 points, while Tivoli Gardens’ and Dunbeholden held firm in seventh and 10th places on 35 and 24 points, respectively, after their 1-1 draw at Royal Lakes.
