Downswell rolling up sleeves for Reno

FC Reno attacking midfielder Renario Downswell said he can lead the charge in getting his team out of the Red Stripe Premier League relegation zone, despite having only six games left.

Reno are 11th with 23 points, just two above cellar dwellers Montego Bay United. The Westmoreland-based club is, however, two points adrift of Dunbeholden who are 10th.

Downswell, who scored the two goals for Reno on Sunday, where they went down 4-2 to league leaders Portmore United at the Frome Sports Complex, said the league position makes him frustrated.

RELEGATION ZONE

"For the past three games, I got three goals and yet we still didn't win," he said. "It's the end of the season and we are in the relegation zone, so I just have to try my best to get the team out."

"Yes, I can (get the team out of relegation) because for the past four seasons now, I've been scoring goals at the back end of each season. I had a good conversation with my father (Wendell, national technical director and former Reno coach), he told me I have to rally the troops and get across the line. I know I will have to put in some hard work. So, each day I go out there, I score goals to try and get the three points," he said.

Downswell, 30, admitted it is a tough task to lead the team out of the relegation zone with their level of inexperience. He, however, is hoping that senior players can return to aid in their fight to stay afloat.

"It is very tough because the majority of the players are inexperienced so the leadership is all on the few senior players," he said. The coaching staff always tell us that we have to get the youngsters to play to the best of their abilities. It's pressuring in a way, yes, but we are going to rally through and get the team out."
