Shaw’s brilliant form continues - as she hunts Golden Boot
As the 2020-21 French Division One feminine season approaches the halfway point, national women's striker Khadija Shaw has shown no signs of any difficulties in her second season in the league.
The 23-year-old Shaw was on the mark again, scoring two goals for her club Bordeaux in their come-from-behind derby win against ASJ Soyaux-Charente at the Stade Sainte Germaine on Saturday.
Coralie Austry put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time but Shaw managed to find the equaliser in the 56th minute and scored the winner six minutes from time to extend her club's winning streak to four games.
Her fourth multi-goal game of the season has increased her total tally to 13, already surpassing the 10 goals that she scored in her debut season in 2019-20. Additionally, she was named the October player of the month, having scored seven goals in four games for that period. In an interview on the club's website, Shaw credited her team with securing her first individual prize for the season.
Work hard
"You want to work hard and put yourself in positions where you can achieve things. Luckily for me, the award was just a single-person award, but I think if it wasn't for my team that would not be possible, so credit goes out to my team as well," Shaw said.
The St Jago High School standout is in the final season of her two-year deal, which she signed in 2019, before the FIFA Women's World Cup. While she said that her first year in France was an adjustment, she said that having no expectations and adapting to the culture helped her to settle.
"You have to adapt everywhere you go, and I think me coming here, I told myself it's a big adaptation," she said. "The environment is different so I think just observing, I think it helped as well as, obviously, scoring goals builds your confidence."
Shaw remains on top in the race for the golden boot with her 13 goals so far, four ahead of Paris Saint Germain's Marie-Antoinette Katoto. Bordeaux remain in third place in the standings with 20 points and in early contention to qualify for next season's Women's Champions League.
