Reggae Girl McCoy gets debut goal for Rangers
National striker Kayla McCoy managed to get off the mark for her new club Rangers as they stormed to a 7-1 thrashing of Partick Thistle in their Scottish Women's Premier League (SWPL) fixture on Wednesday at the Hummel Training Centre in Scotland.
Rangers were fuelled by a hat-trick from Lizzie Arnot as well as a brace from Kirsten Reilly as they helped to vault Rangers to the top of the standings after five games played.
McCoy, who signed for Rangers last August, scored in the 75th minute, finishing from close range from the rebound after Arnot's shot was initially blocked by Thistle goalkeeper Danica Dalziel. The goal was McCoy's first in a competitive game since joining the club. Brogan Hay was the other goalscorer for Rangers.
Fellow Reggae Girl Chantelle Swaby was among the three changes that Rangers manager Malky Thomson made to the team from their previous win over Hibernian last Sunday.
Thompson said that he was pleased with the calmness shown by his squad despite not being able to initially capitalise on the many chances that came their way throughout the game
"I thought we showed good patience in our play throughout the game, especially in the first half when we created a lot of chances but we never managed to convert, Thomson told RangersTV. In the second half, I think we dominated the game and created similar chances to the first but we managed to put them in the back of the net. With the win Rangers who are at the top of the table with 15 points, have opened up a two-point lead over defending champions Glasgow City who have 13 points from five games played. The two sides will meet in two weeks but before then, Rangers will hope to continue their five-game winning streak when they face Aberdeen on Sunday.
McCoy's goal comes as the squad for the upcoming international friendly against Costa Rica on October 24 is being finalised.
