We should have gotten more – Blaine - Reggae Girlz coach eyes table-topping duel with Dominican Republic

JAMAICA GOT the right result in their 6-1 win over Grenada in their Concacaf senior women's World Cup qualifier in Grenada yesterday. However, national senior women's head coach, Vin Blaine, says that they should have netted more, to help their goal difference

The Reggae Girlz were led by braces from Jody Brown (42nd and 55th minutes) and Khadija Shaw (45+4 and 90th minutes), as they made it back-to-back wins in Group C in a performance where they were rarely threatened, but lacked the killer instinct in not increasing their tally. Tiffany Cameron and Alika Keene added goals for Jamaica in the 28th and 73rd minutes, respectively, while Roneisha Frank got Grenada's lone goal in the 52nd minute.

With the Dominican Republic beating Grenada and the Cayman Islands by 13 goals combined, Jamaica were looking to close the goal differential and put themselves in first place heading into the month-long break.

While Blaine was pleased with the result, he said that the team should have been more clinical in front of goal with the chances they had to avoid a tricky scenario heading into the final two games.

"I thought that we got some looks at goal where we didn't capitalise on them. But it is a situation now where we (could) go into the game against the Dominican Republic and may be forced to win and they could get a draw (and go through)," Blaine said. "That is the difficulty that we are facing, but we have to try and make it up in the next game."

Jamaica had 23 shots with 11 on target, but could not manage the same efficiency like the Dominicans when they played Grenada on Thursday, when they won 9-0.

Blaine credited the improved mentality of the Grenadians, who despite being under pressure for the whole game, had moments where they managed to capitalise on the Reggae Girlz unforced errors.

"We started off a little tentatively, but you have to give it (credit) to Grenada. They got nine in the first game and they came here with a different mentality," Blaine said.

Jamaica's Reggae Girlz now have a +9 goal difference compared to Dominican Republic's (+13), while both are tied on six points.

A point of concern, however, is the health of the Swaby sisters, Chantelle and Allyson, who both had to be substituted because of injury. The pair started in central defence in their opener against Bermuda. However, Blaine says that they looked fine, even ahead of a final evaluation.

"They looked OK. When the assessment is made I will know (exactly). But they have a lot of time to recover. They will go back to their clubs and I am sure that they will be playing," Blaine said.

Jamaica will play the Cayman Islands on April 9, before closing the round against the Dominican Republic on April 12.
