Blaine waiting for England-based Girlz
National senior women's football team head coach Vin Blaine says that he will face another close decision regarding the availability of some England-based players for the final two games of the first round of the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifiers.
The Reggae Girlz will complete their first-round slate in the international window next month when they travel to the Cayman Islands on April 9 and host group leaders Dominican Republic at Sabina Park to determine who will qualify for the final round in Mexico this summer.
The team was without some of the England-based talent, including Chelsea's Drew Spence, Leicester City's Paige Bailey-Gayle, and Liverpool's Jade Bailey, who have yet to secure their Jamaican passports.
Blaine says that while there has been progress in fast-tracking the paperwork, the Jamaica Football Federation is working hard on their availability.
"Things are looking up," Blaine told STAR Sports. "We have not closed off on determining which one is coming or which one is not coming. [But] that's going down to the wire as it did for the first two games."
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer and Charlton Athletic's Vyan Sampson were among the England-born players that secured their documentation and were called up for the first games against Bermuda and Grenada.
Blaine said in the February window that he was targeting that the rest of the English talent in the pool would have their documentation approved to be available for selection for the April window. With details still being finalised to determine the final 23-member squad, Blaine said that he is still optimistic about meeting his target.
"Hopefully, we will get them, if not all, a few," he said. "But I can't say for sure now definitely who we would have gotten. But I know it is still a work in progress." Blaine said.
Jamaica are tied with the Dominican Republic on six points in Group C but are in second place because of a smaller goal difference. Only the group winner will advance to the final round of qualifying which will take place this July.
