Doctor Speed - Bouwahghi Nkrumie enjoying KC captaincy
Around the Kingston College (KC) track and field camp, sprinter and co-captain Bouwahghi Nkrumie is known as Dr Speed. It is under the moniker that he hopes to power through to glory in a hotly contested Class One Boys 100m at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships next week.
Nkrumie has had a strong season so far, breaking the Corporate Area Development Meet record with a time of 10.40 seconds, erasing the 10.45 set by Calabar High School's Edward Clarke in 2015 and equalled by KC's Roshaun Rowe last year. He also ran 10.40 at the recently held Carifta Trials.
The 'Doctor' nickname can be traced back to how he got his first name, which he says was from his father who heard it on a radio programme.
"He named me after a doctor," Nkrumie told STAR Sports. :He was listening to the radio and he heard the person say Dr Bouwahjgie and he said that he liked it."
His doctor nickname does not translate to his studies as he is not much of a fan of the sciences.
However, he is embracing running fast as a technique to be crafted as much as someone training to be a doctor.
"I'm not really a science person," he said. "I'm more like a business person, but a doctor, that is just me with speed."
His performances have justified that as his times are ranked in the top 10 this season by ISSA.
After a difficult start, he says he is finding his form and shouldering the responsibility that he has as a leader of a team that is favoured to reclaim the Mortimer Geddes Trophy.
"From the first meet I had a little hamstring strain, but with guts and knowing that I am the captain for KC, I think it's my point of duty to lead the team from the front and ensure that the right vibes are in the camp," Nkrumie said. "This year, on paper, we are the favourites and to be the favourites we have to be executing at the development meets. We have the athletes to win and as the captain, I have to give the team an extra drive, an extra push in the most positive way to win."
