Trinidad ready for Barbados’ battle
Trinidad and Tobago continued their winning ways after beating strugglers the United States of America (USA) 43-27 in the Americas Netball World Cup Qualifiers at the National Indoor Sports Centre yesterday.
Head coach Kemba Duncan said she rested her stronger players to go up against the world's No 14-ranked Barbados. Trinidad and Tobago are ranked No 11.
"Today's game was about resting legs, but also what we want to tidy up by tomorrow is our errors, converting our turnovers. Coming here is to qualify and we are on that path. What we want to achieve on court is transitioning and that's what we have been working on so far," Duncan said.
The USA, who have won one game, scored eight points in the first quarter while the twin island republic scored 18.
Trinidad and Tobago furthered their lead by halftime to 27 goals while the USA moved to 13.
At the end of the third quarter, Trinidad and Tobago were leading the USA 38-19.
On court two it was a ding-dong battle with the Cayman Islands edging Antigua and Barbuda 47-42.
The first quarter scores were tied 12-12.
Not much separated the teams at halftime as Antigua and Barbuda scored 25 points at that stage, to lead the Cayman Islands by one goal.
The game was 35-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Head coach Janet Lettman said they used their morning match against Trinidad and Tobago to fine-tune their strategies for Antigua and Barbuda, which were fruitful.
"I'm happy!" Lettman said. "(However), it's going back to the drawing board. We've got two more games... so it's for us to be calm, relax and think about our next move and how we are going to get better and stronger," Lettman said.
