WESTERN BUREAU:

Edwin Allen High will be aiming to get back to the semi-finals of the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup football competition for the first time in 30 years when they take on Central High at Foga Road High this afternoon in the quarter-final group match at 3.

The defending Ben Francis Cup knockout champions will have to win by three clear goals to be certain of qualification. They currently sit third in the four-team group with three points and a minus one goal difference.

Dinthill, who also have three points, boast a plus one goal difference and could prevent the Frankfield-based Edwin Allen from advancing with a narrow win over Clarendon College (CC) in their 3:15 p.m. clash at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

Edwin Allen need a huge favour from their fellow parishioners CC, who would secure qualification with merely a draw as they possess six points.

Tafari Burton, coach of Edwin Allen, said they are prepared physically and more importantly mentally for this game.

"At this point, the players are physically ready, however, as coaches, we have to be more concerned about the mental state and preparation of the players approaching such a crucial game. We can't take anything likely in this group so it will be a tough test.

"I don't know much about Central. I didn't get a chance to play them in the preseason but got a glimpse of them at Foga Road doubleheader one day. I know it's a team that put the ball down and move it. They are also a running team. We have to make sure we are prepared for the task," Burton said.

The last time Edwin Allen reached the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup was 1992 and after lifting the Ben Francis Cup knockout last season, Burton said their objective is to reach even higher heights. He noted that getting to the semi-finals is the first step towards making history.

"It (reaching the semifinals) would be a glorious moment for the school and community. These are objectives we have set and look to achieve although we know it's never easy," Burton said.
