New acquisitions ignite spark in Vere
Vere United secured their first three points of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) on Sunday following a 1-0 win over promoted Faulkand at Wespow Park in Montego Bay.
The win has propelled the Clarendon-based Vere to 10 points and 12th position on the 14-team table, and their goalkeeper Roje Williams says the victory has kicked-started what is now a renewed energy in the camp.
"The win has brought more confidence in the team and has also brought the team more together. The vibes are a lot different, and the new players that have come into the team boosted us, with everyone working harder," Williams said.
Goal scoring had been their Achilles heel with the Linval Dixon-coached Vere finding the back of the net just three times in 12 games.
Club president Lothan Cousins has opened his chequebook and made seven acquisitions including attacking players Fakibi Farquharson on loan from Mount Pleasant and centre forward Romario Bryan from Maverley/Hughenden.
Also joining are former BB Coke and Portmore United player Jason Dyer, the Molynes United pair of Shaquille Notice and Kemoy Phillips and former Garvey Maceo standouts Derwayne Dyer and Shaquille Blackstock.
Cousins is confident these moves will boost the squad and give coach Dixon ammunition to start reaping more positive results.
"Credit should be given to the coaching staff, in particular coach Linval Dixon who has displayed a level of patience and maturity as a coach which should be commended. We are building for the future, and with the current team in place, we are on track to remain highly competitive as we continue to grow as a club with the hope that one day we can achieve the highest level of success in the competition," said Cousins.
Defensively, Vere have been good, conceding just eight goals while keeping six clean sheets with Williams and captain Fitzroy Cummings, who has been recently called up to the national team, at the heart of the backline.
Vere United will hunt more points this weekend when they host fifth-place Harbour View at the Wembley Centre of Excellence.
