Thomas eyes Cup success to boost Molynes
With their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) future for next season secure, Molynes United head coach Alex Thomas is putting their energy into ending their domestic season with silverware as the Lynk Cup quarterfinals first leg begins this afternoon.
Molynes United will take on Portmore United in the second game of a double-header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
Molynes United defeated Hopewell United and Waterhouse on their road to the final eight while Portmore United got past Lime Hall Academy and Arnett Gardens .
Thomas is in his first year with Molynes who are currently in ninth place in the JPL with four games left in the regular season. While it has been a year of development for the club, Thomas says that the Lynk Cup represents an opportunity for the club to take a step forward in their four years in the top flight.
"Reaching the quarterfinals is a boost for the club, especially and we as a club can move forward going to the semifinals. We are eyeing this competition," Thomas told STAR Sports. "It would be a big boost for us if we can put our hands on it because getting silverware for Molynes United is second to none."
Molynes has only played Portmore once in league play this season, a 1-1 draw on February 6 where Shamaro Dennis and Emilio Rousseau traded goals. While that game maybe a good point of reference in their preparation, Thomas said that they are taking nothing for granted as cup ties demand a different mentality.
"In a knockout game, things can go either way. So you have to be mentally focused, mentally prepared and have the right attitude. When we have the chances we have to take advantage of it," Thomas said. "You have to prepare and plan differently. But the preparation has been good for the game and we are ready for today."
Portmore United head coach Phillip Williams is not taking his eye off the main goal, which is getting a spot in the JPL playoffs, but he said that despite the rotations, the squad will be strong enough for the task.
"We will rest some of our regulars as we aim to keep our legs fresh for our top six push, but the quality of the squad will not be compromised," Williams said.
In the first game of the double-header, Tivoli Gardens will face Dunbeholden at 4 p.m.
