Parchment covers all bases

BUDAPEST, Hungary

After being snake bitten twice last year at the World Championships and again at the Commonwealth Games, Olympic 110 metres hurdles champion Hansle Parchment was not leaving anything behind this time around in his bid to get back on the podium.

His meticulous approach has paid off with another medal in his cabinet, taking silver in a season's best time of 13.07 seconds officially opening Jamaica's medal account on day three of the World Championships, yesterday. Reigning champion, American Grant Holloway, won his third straight title in 12.96, while his compatriot Daniel Roberts was third in 13.09.

Parchment, because of injury, did not compete in the final last year after being in fine form as well as in the Commonwealth Games final for similar reasons. This year, Parchment said he was intent on not letting the same thing happen again.

"This time around I made sure to take a different approach. I was drinking like crazy because the place was very hot. So I was making sure that there was no chance of me getting that cramp. I was hydrating throughout the night," Parchment said. "So I am very happy that I could come out, run full rounds and be on the medal podium."

It is his second World Championships medal repeating the silver medal performance that he produced in Beijing in 2015. He credits his coach Fitz Coleman in putting a programme in place that saw him continue the trend of producing when it matters most.

"I don't know. Maybe I can give the credit to my coach. He knows to put the programme together well and make sure that I am ready at the right time," Parchment said.

He is wary that he still has to put together a strong start to contend with the strong field that is emerging but he is pleased that his performance was worthy of another podium. He is also regretful that his countryman Rasheed Broadbell did make it to this stage to give Jamaica a medal, knowing that another was possible as well as world under-20 triple jump Jaydon Hibbert who retired with an injury from his final

"I know that both of them would have been on the medal podium. I know that the hurdles race would have been hotter with Rasheed there. We just have to just move forward and see how best we can improve," Parchment said.
