Weather conditions fail to affect KC in 1-0 win

Heavy rain, lightning strike and a lengthy stoppage failed to hamper Kingston College (KC) as they defeated Charlie Smith 1-0 in the schoolboy ISSA Manning Cup football competition yesterday at Calabar High School.
A 76th-minute strike by Armani Broomfield was the decisive goal, as Charlie Smith's goalkeeper, Deonte Gray, mishandled the ball in his 18-yard box, which Broomfield pounced on quickly to strengthen KC's grip atop Group A.
Vassell Reynolds, head coach of KC, believes the lengthy stoppage worked in their favour.
"We figured out that this game was critical to us. We needed the three points. What the guys showed in the last 25 minutes really was that the stoppage of the game didn't impact us negatively," Reynolds stated.
In the first half, KC's Kelvin Brown had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring but was stopped by Charlie Smith's custodian Gray. Brown, again in the 60th minute, came close to scoring, but his effort went high over Charlie Smith's goal.
Eight minutes later, it was Charlie Smith's opportunity through Kevaughn Gayle, who, despite being one-on-one with the KC's goalkeeper Dominic Robinson, could not score.
This eventually proved costly as Broomfield ensured all three points for KC, courtesy of his sharp thinking in the 76th minute when he pounced on the spilt ball.
Reynolds added that the victory allows them some comfort atop the group but contends that his players have more to offer.
"The victory now gives us a little cushion, but I still feel the team has something more in them. I think they're capable of playing much better, and the fact that we've not hit 90 per cent as yet, based on that, I think we may have achieved a little bit more than what I thought we would have at this point," Reynolds added.
The match between Calabar and Hydel, set for the same venue, was postponed because of lighting issues.
