Arnett, Mount Pleasant draw in exciting match
Arnett Gardens coach Xavier Gilbert and Mount Pleasant assistant coach Davion Ferguson were both satisfied with a point, after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in soggy conditions in the feature Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football game at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night.
Kimani Arbouine fired the home team in front after 13 minutes, but Kimonie Bailey's 42nd minute goal ensured a share of the spoils for Mount Pleasant.
"It wasn't our best performance, but the conditions, we knew, were not going to be easy," Gilbert said. "It was a tough contest for us.
"Happy that we didn't lose the game. It's important that we start to get back some points on the table," he added. "But it was a gutsy performance."
Mount Pleasant were the first to settle and came close through Jean Claudia Ferreira's effort early on.
However, it was the 'Junglists' who took the lead when Fitzroy Cummings and Shaquan Davis, who was caught in no man's land, were both beaten by a long ball from the back, allowing Arbouine to score in an unguarded net.
Nevertheless, Mount Pleasant continued to persevere, especially through Devonte Campbell down the right, and late in the half the winger won a corner on one of his devastating dribbles. Three minutes before the interval, Bailey slammed home the resulting kick during a goalmouth scramble, after the goalkeeper had spilled possession.
Mount Pleasant continued to have the better of play in the second half, with Daniel Green coming closest to scoring with a header, and Gadail Irving barely missed the mark from a free kick.
However, Arnett had a couple chances of their own, with their best chance coming through a Warner Brown header.
Mount Pleasant's Ferguson thought they were unlucky not to get all three points.
"I think we gave up a really easy goal. But I think we created enough chances to actually win the game. That is something that has been plaguing us," he said.
"But a point away to Arnett in the 'Jungle' is a point we are grateful for."
Mount Pleasant dropped to fifth with seven points, while Arnett are eighth on five points.
