Cavalier, Tivoli play out entertaining draw
Defending champions Cavalier Soccer Club managed to grab a share of the points against Tivoli Gardens Football Club courtesy of a 79th-minute strike by substitute Shaquille Stein in their Jamaica Premier League football match at the Stadium East yesterday.
The Jerome Waite-coached Tivoli Gardens came into the fixture, the second of a doubleheader at the venue, hunting their second win of the season while their opponents were seeking to avoid defeat for the first time.
In the first half, Tivoli Gardens created better scoring opportunities, coming close when Kemar Shaw's powerfully driven shot in the 39th minute having to be cleared off the line by defender Jeovanni Laing.
That proved to be a warning shot as Anthony Nelson broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute with a shot past goalkeeper Jeadine White.
Nelson almost doubled the score in stoppage time, but his acrobatic shot smashed against the upright.
After making four substitutions to start the second half, Cavalier began their hunt for an equaliser and came close in the 69th minute, when Kaile Auvrey and Dwayne Atkinson got opportunities to score off the same play but could not convert. Both players managed to hit the goalpost.
Luck would run out for Tivoli in the 79th minute as substitutes Stein and Atkinson combined passes before Stein converted into an empty net.
Tivoli, however, could have won the contest in stoppage time, but Cavalier custodian White managed to stretch his right foot far enough to keep out Nickalia Fuller's goal-bound effort.
Rudolph Speid, head coach of Cavalier, expressed that a minor tweak at halftime proved to be decisive.
"At halftime we changed the system which was why we took over the game. We were still rushing the game but they will learn. If we were calm we probably would have scored a couple more (goals)," he suggested.
Jerome Waite, Tivoli Gardens' head coach, believes his team could've scored more goals.
"We got our fair number of chances but it was pretty much a good game. Cavalier is a championship team but they realised that Tivoli Gardens came to play," he shared.
In the day's earlier game, Harbour View registered a 3-1 victory over Racing United courtesy of a brace by Andre Fagan and a penalty in added time by Rohan Brown.
Racing United benefited by an own goal by Casseam Priestley in the 71st minute.
