Outsiders gut-punch Reggae 6 players
CONSECUTIVE outsiders - 11-1 shot, LIL' MAGGIE, and 17-1 stunner, GALOPIN DE VELOZ - knocked all but four Reggae 6 tickets off their perches on Sunday, resulting in payouts of $923,273 each to the quartet left standing.
Chugging along on Easy Street after the first three races were won by favourites RESTORATION (7-5), SIX AVENUE (4-5) and PIP (8-5), bets were sent tumbling when LIL' MAGGIE reeled in ROMAN PRINCESS in the fourth among maiden three-year-old fillies at five and a half furlongs.
LIL' MAGGIE, whose November 9 run behind GOLDEN LAWYER, when highly fancied at 5-1, was too bad to be true, confirmed suspicions by recovering from a stuttering start and being tailed off down the backstretch.
Making rapid improvement turning for home, LIL' MAGGIE closed strongly along the rail with claiming rider Akeem Grant after 1-5 favourite CHINITA ESTRELLA's mid-track challenge flattened while taking aim at leader ROMAN PRINCESS.
Punters were still reeling from LIL' MAGGIE's gut punch when GALOPIN DE VELOZ, who ran terribly on November 2 off a six-month lay-up, landed the gamble second time up, treated with Lasix for the fifth event at six and a half furlongs among three-year-old maidens.
Hopping to the front from the off, GALOPIN DE VELOZ made every post a winning one with Oneil Mullings, winning like a 1-9 favourite at odds of 17-1 for Peter Parsard.
SHE'S MYHEDGEFUND predictably won the Reggae 6 closer, sent to the front under a snug hold by Panamanian Victor Sanchez, seeing off SIR WONG DON down the backstretch for a comfortable four and three-quarter length win ahead of COSMIC FORCE.
The Reggae 6 continues next Saturday, opening with a $12.2 million single-winner bonus, approaching a possible mandatory-payout date of November 30.
