Brown, Arbouine lead Arnett to victory
Xavier Gilbert-coached Arnett Gardens FC moved to second in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) on 27 points, one behind leaders Mount Pleasant Academy FC following a 2-1 victory over Harbour View FC courtesy of strikes from Warner Brown and Kimani Arbouine at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex last night.
Garnett Lawrence, assistant coach of Arnett Gardens FC, said, "It was a game of two halves."
He added: "We had to make some early changes when we got the 2-0 lead to keep the legs fresh because we have a midweek fixture. We played well in the first half and in patches in the second half.
Commonly known as the 'Junglists', Arnett Gardens started off in search of goals and came close in the fifth minute as the in-form Warner Brown had his goal-bound header expertly saved by Harbour View's custodian Demelcio Fer.
Arnett were relentless and had an attempt on goal again, this time through Shai Smith who broke free of his marker but lashed his effort wide of the mark in the 16th minute.
Chances turned to goals in the 18th minute as Arnett Gardens were awarded a penalty and Brown guided his spot kick wide of the diving goalkeeper, who went the right way.
In the second half, Arnett Gardens continued to control the lion's share of possession and goalscoring opportunities. They would eventually double their lead at the 57th minute through Arbouine, who separated himself from his marker and then guided a right-footed shot into the goal.
Harbour View, who stayed 11th on 12 points, managed to pull a goal back in the 69th minute through Oquassa Chong by way of the game's second penalty.
Chong's goal marked the team's first in four games.
Donald Stewart, head coach of Harbour View FC, stated that while goalscoring continues to be an issue credit must be given to the Arnett Gardens goalkeeper Roje Williams.
"Goalscoring has been an issue. In the final third, the decision making needs some fixing. Nevertheless, we still created some opportunities where we could have done better, but (there was) good goalkeeping from the Arnett Gardens goalkeeper," he stated.
In the day's earlier game Mount Pleasant defeated Humble Lion 4-1.
Mount Pleasant Academy re-established their lead following a comprehensive 4-1 win over Humble Lion in the first game of last night's doubleheader. Humble Lion stayed third from bottom on 10 points, the same as Molynes United and one more that cellar dwellers Chapelton Maroons.
Daniel Green fired Mount Pleasant into the lead after 36 minutes and Kimonie Bailey's league leading eighth goal of the season put them 2-0 up at the half. Then two goals from late substitute Nicholas Nelson sealed the win.
Afiba Chambers scored for Humble Lion at the 56th minute, when reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Mount Pleasant climbed to 28 points.
Arnett moved ahead of Waterhouse, who slipped to third on 25 points.
