St Jago’s Class Three boys on fire
ST JAGO High School's Class Three boys appear ready to scorch the National Stadium track at the March 25-29 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships (Champs).
The St Jago boys produced several outstanding performances on the track last weekend at the Sprint Fest and the Purewater/R. Danny Williams/JC which were both held at the Ashenheim Stadium on Old Hope Road.
At the Sprint Fest 200 metres on Friday, Jevaney Findlay and Rajaun Romelly were in top form in the half-lap event. Findlay clocked 22.55 seconds, the fastest time among his peers while his teammate Romelly was not far behind. He won his heat in 22.56, the second fastest time overall.
The following day the Class Three boys from the Spanish Town-based school continued to produce top level performances. In a jaw-dropping performance young Khieme Campbell excelled in the Class Three 800m. Known primarily as a 400m runner, Campbell, competing in his first-ever 800m, stopped the clock at an astounding two minutes 02.59 seconds to top the field. He edged out Kingston College's Kenyan athlete, Julius Itubo, the favourite for the Champs title, Itubo was second in 2:02.82.
Following the weekend's impressive performances, Davaon Spence, who oversees the Class Three programme at the school, expressed confidence that his athletes would dominate all events in the class at Champs.
"I have a very disciplined group of Class Three boys who are committed to making St Jago proud, both on the track and in the classroom," said Spence. "Preparing these boys has been very challenging. We plan to achieve excellent results in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m relay and field events at Champs this year, and I am very excited," added Spence, a former St Jago sprinter.
