Chung: Nothing new in Greenwood situation
General secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Dennis Chung, says 'nothing has changed' and former England forward Mason Greenwood is no closer to playing for the Reggae Boyz than he was months ago.
According to reports in the English press, the Marseille striker is just a signature away from switching his international allegiance from the Three Lions to the Reggae Boyz. The reports have indicated that all remains for the process to be completed is a signature from one of the former Manchester United forward's family members to address a technicality.
While admitting that there is still a bit of documentation that needs to be completed, Chung insisted that they are no closer to getting it done.
"I do not know where that (report) came from. Nothing has changed for us. It is the same situation," he stated.
He disclosed that the issue they have stems from old documents that need to be clarified before they make the next step.
"We are basically waiting on a document. That is all we are waiting on but we have been waiting on that for a little while and there is still no timeline on when that documentation will be completed," he said.
Greenwood has been blocked from playing for England by the English Football Association after he was suspended due to charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour three years ago.
Although the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service and Greenwood moved from Manchester United to Getafe in Spain and then Marseille in France to revive his career, he was told that he would not be selected for the Three Lions again.
However, reports this week from England said that when he completes the necessary paperwork, the forward will be available for Steve McClaren's Reggae Boyz.
The 23-year-old qualifies for the Reggae Boyz through his father, who was born in Jamaica, and he has only been capped once by England while under the age of 21, meaning he is eligible to switch allegiance.
If all goes through, Greenwood could be part of McClaren's squad for their World Cup qualifiers in June, according to England's Daily Star.
Greenwood moved to Marseille from Manchester United last summer in a PS27-m deal and is currently the leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 12 goals.
