Carifta Trials: KC’s Clarke clocks brilliant 13.06 in U20 110m hurdles
DANIEL CLARKE of Kingston College (KC) stole the show on the final day of the Carifta Trials at G.C. Foster College yesterday.
Competing in the final event of the day, the Boys' Under-20 110m hurdles, Clarke sped to an impressive 13.06 seconds, relegating the previously unbeaten Shaquane Gordon of Calabar to second in 13.38. Shakir Lewis of Jamaica College (JC) was third in 13.98.
Tiana Marshall of Wolmer's Girls won the Girls' Under-20 100m hurdles in 13.33 ahead of St Jago High's Bryana Davidson (13.45) and Akeelah Bell of Wolmer's Girls who was third in 13.51.
Malayia Duncan of St Jago High claimed victory in the Girls' Under-17 100m hurdles, clocking 13.30 seconds. Nickayla Russell of Holmwood Technical took second in 13.58 with Seana Wilson of Alpha finishing third in 14.00.
In the Boys' Under-17 110m hurdles, Mark-Daniel Allen of Wolmer's Boys secured first place in 13.73. Brandon Bennett of KC finished second in 13.87, with Kemarly Fletcher of Calabar taking third in 13.90.
Holmwood's Jaydon Collins was a double winner at the meet. Following his 100m win on Friday's opening day, Collins clocked 21.67 seconds for the win, relegating the Edwin Allen pair of Kelel Archibald (21.85) and Taheem Thompson (21.86) to second and third place, respectively.
After placing third in the Girls' Under-17 100m, Rihanna Scott of Ferncourt bounced back in style, capturing the 200m title in 24.13. Seana Wilson of Alpha was second in 24.34 while Danelia Clarke of Edwin Allen took third in 24.57.
In the Girls' Under-20 200m, World Under-20 bronze medallist Shanoya Douglas of Muschett High turned the tables on 100m champion Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High.
Dockery exploded out of the blocks, opening a big lead after the first 100m but Douglas showed her class in the latter stages to overtake her, winning in a fast 23.12. Dockery finished second in 23.61 while third went to Rihana Allen of St Elizabeth Technical in 24.16.
With the late withdrawal of 200m champion Gary Card in the Boys' Under-20 200 metres, St George's College's Tyreece Foreman, running out of lane eight, scored a massive upset, winning in 20.97. Antonio Powell of Edwin Allen placed second in 21.05 with Calabar's Junior Gallimore, third in 21.23.
There was high drama in the Girls' Under-20 400m hurdles as overwhelming favourite, Kelly-Ann Carr of Edwin Allen High, this season's leading female in the event, fell at the final barrier despite holding a big lead. Vere Technical's Shevaughn Thomas took advantage, winning in a personal best 58.87 seconds. Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall also achieved a personal best, finishing second in 58.89 while Daynea Colstock of Green Island High claimed third in 59.32.
In a closely contested Boys' Under-20 400m hurdles final, Princewell Martin of JC posted a personal best of 50.84 to take the win. Robert Miller of Calabar also ran a personal best, finishing second in 50.89 , with Tajoneil Gordon of KC placing third in 53.11.
Alyssa Carty of St Jago High won the Girls' Under-17 400m hurdles in 1:03.08, ahead of Llande-Kaye Hibbert of Holmwood, who finished second in 1:03.52.
Excelsior High's Jaeden Campbell secured victory in the Boys' Under-17 400m hurdles, clocking 53.64. Eshanee Porter of KC was second in 54.45.
Cindy Rose of Holmwood Technical produced an outstanding performance in the Girls' Under-20 800m, winning in 2:09.78 after outduelling her sister, Jovi, in the final 80m. Jovi was second in 2:10.54.
