Nelson at the double again for TG
Tivoli Gardens' midfielder Anthony Nelson has found a rich vein of form in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
Yesterday he scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season to lift the west Kingston-based club to a 4-2 win over hosts Dunbeholden. Tivoli, after the win, moved to 42 points and sixth spot in the league. Earlier this week coach Jerome Waite said they were determined to make the final push for a play-off spot and with Nelson in such outstanding form it appears that they will be able to maintain their top six spot or even climb higher.
The 25-year-old Nelson has now scored five goals in his last three matches in just seven days. On Wednesday, March 12, he scored a brace in Tivoli's 3-0 win over Molynes United. Then four days later he scored once as Tivoli came from behind to clip Waterhouse 3-2 in a very exciting match.
Nelson was involved in an accident last December and only returned to the starting team recently.
"He (Nelson) is back. He is one who can also make the transition to the senior set-up. In December he met in an accident and he suffered from thereon. But he is back for the last three games and so far he is on nine goals and that speaks volumes for him," Waite told STAR Sports on Monday.
He got his goals in the 48th and 51st minutes of yesterday's match as Tivoli registered their third consecutive win. The other scorers for Tivoli were Rushawn Oldfield in the first minute and Lennox Russell in the 82nd.
In their three-match winning run Tivoli have scored 10 goals and conceded four. Their next match is against Racing United on Sunday.
Portmore United and Waterhouse also scored victories in yesterday's midweek games. Jahein Rose, a 22 year-old midfielder and 23-year-old forward Oralndo Russell were on target as Portmore blanked Harbour View 2-0. Portmore are fourth with 53 points while Harbour View are 10th with 28.
Waterhouse came from behind to clip Vere Phoenix 2-1. Denzel McKenzie, an 18-year-old midfielder, put Vere Phoenix in front in 32nd minute but Waterhouse roared back in the second half with goals from Leonardo Jibbison (71st) and Andre Fletcher in added time (90+4). Waterhouse are eighth in the league with 41 points while Vere Phoenix remain at the foot of the table with 22.
