Henry shines as Edwin Allen’s girls dominate 100m at JC meet

LED by a brilliant 11.34 seconds by Alexxe Henry to win the Class One girls' 100 metres, Edwin Allen girls swept the 100 metres in all classes at last Saturday's 32nd staging of the Purewater/R. Danny Williams/JC Development Meet at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College (JC).

Edwards, a Trinidadian who ran the anchor leg as the Frankfield-based school swept to victory in the Championship of America 4x100m at last year's Penn Relays in Philadelphia, destroyed Carifta Under-20 double sprint champion Shanoya Douglas of Holland High with a superb performance, handing the former Muschett High athlete a rare defeat on local soil.

In a race which also included Shemonique Hazle of Hydel High, Edwards took control early and won going away, breaking the one-year-old meet record of 11.39 set by former Lacovia High star Sabrina Dockery. Douglas clocked 11.50 for second with Hazle third overall in 12.01.

Another overseas-based athlete at Edwin Allen, Kereile Etienne of Dominica, was also impressive in topping her peers in Class Two. Etienne won her heat comfortably in 11.82 to be the only Class Two athlete under 12 seconds. First-year Class Two athlete Shameika McLean of Foga Road High won her heat in a personal best 12.01 for the second fastest time in the class, with third going to Sashana Johnson of Hydel in 12.20.

Edwin Allen's Monique Bogle and Danelia Clarke posted the fastest times in Classes Four and Class 3. Bogle won Class Four in a personal best 12.40, while teammate Niesha Campbell was second with a personal best 12.53 and Shanana Chin of Wolmer's Girls, third in 12.56.

Clarke was also in fine form after posting a personal best 12.21 to win Class Three, ahead of Holmwood Technical's Adalia Simpson with a personal best 12.26. Tawaine Morrison of Knox College was third in 12.34.

Earlier, Edwin Allen posted two big wins through Maria Crossfield in the 400m hurdles Open and Tashana Godfrey in the 80m hurdles Class Three.

Crossfield posted a personal best 1:02.66 to win ahead of Hydel's Natassia Fletcher, second overall in 1:02.74. Crossfield's teammate Shanique Cassanova was third in 1:03.79.

Godfrey won the 80m hurdles in a meet record 11.33 seconds.

The meet was also a good one for Hydel's girls. Trinidadian Oshea Cummings led the way with two wins in personal best times. She won the Class Three 400m in 56.93 seconds and the 800m in 2:16.63.

Hydel also had good results in the field events with Zavian Bernard (12.33m) and Sabrina Atkinson (12.28m) finishing first and second in the triple jump open.

Wolmer's Girls' had double success in the hurdles. Akeelah Bell won the Class Two 100m hurdles in a meet record 13.47 seconds, while Tiana Marshall took the Class One 100m hurdles in 13.66.

Robert Miller of Hydel led the way among the boys. The former Calabar High standout, in his first outing for his new school, captured the 110m hurdles in 13.76 seconds and the 400m hurdles in 51.10 seconds. Michael Dwyer of Kingston College finished second in the 110m hurdles 14.01. In the 400m hurdles KC's Jahvanie Tyrell was second in 51.85 with Jamaica College's Tajay Black third in 52.00.

Hosts JC had several big wins. Joseph Salmon producing a meet record 66.32m to win the Class One discus. His teammate Michael Andre Edwards won the Class One triple jump with a meet record 15.58m. Calabar's Antonio Anderson ended second with 15.14m.

Samuel Creary (JC) took the Class One 800m in 1:52.56 while his teammate Rikardo Lee won the Class Three event in 2:02.94.

Johan Ramaldo Smythe of Holland High ruled supreme in the Class One 100m. The former Muschett High standout won in a meet record 10.47. JC's Makaelem Woods (10.56) and Omary Robinson (10.59) ended second and third overall.

Wolmer's Boys' Deandre Myers dominated the Class One 400 metres, topping the field in a meet record 49.26. Jamaica College's duo of Rushane Richards (49.67) and Orel Lawrence (49.98) finished second and third overall.
