My friend needs help

December 15, 2017

Dear Pastor,
I am in need of your advice. I am 20 years old and I have a friend who I used to go to high school with in Jamaica. He is now living in the US.

Lately, he has been calling me and telling me how much he is scared that something bad is going to happen to him and he does not know what to do. I knew that before he moved to the US.

He is now living with his mother and brother. He used to live in Florida where he got into lots of trouble. Since he has been up here, he seems to be giving up on life.

Whenever he calls me, all I can do is to give him advice that I hope he takes.

I used to tell him to go and get a job so that he doesn't have to stay in the house all day. He got a job but it lasted only for a few days.

He then told me that he met some people who invited him to church but then he told me that he believes that they work with 'science'.

He keeps telling me that he sees red and that this might be the last time I will be able to talk to him. He also tells me that he gets up at two in the morning and told his stepdad to drop him at the bus station without money.

I just don't know what to do. He wants to come and stay with me, but I live with my dad, and even though I live upstairs from my dad, I will not disrespect him by having someone stay there knowing that it will cause a problem.

Also I have a lot of my own problems since I also have to pay for my own college fees which is hard enough.

Pastor, please, give me some advice on how to help this young man since he is only 19 years old.
Thank you.
T.S.

Dear T.S.,
This young man needs to see a doctor. Perhaps he needs psychiatric care. He does not appear to be rational. Do not get involved with him emotionally.

You need to impress upon him that he needs to go to the doctor. What he is doing is abnormal. Continue to pray for him.
Pastor.
