Magnum Queen contestant escapes death

Magnum Kings and Queens (MKQ) competitor Shanekia Morrison, better known as Suspense, suffered multiple injuries after crashing her motor vehicle in Temple Hall at approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday.

"I am not one of the most experienced drivers, but all I can say is, if you're tired, take a five because it's a blessing to be alive right now. I'm just here saying thanks," Morrison told THE STAR.

She said she was campaigning for the competition, something she does every night even while maintaining a full-time job as a compliance officer at the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation.

"I had to get home because I was heading to church. I was super tired. I don't know what possessed me to say I'm gonna drive home. It happened quick and fast. I didn't even feel the sleep coming," Morrison said.

Morrison readily accepted the accident was her fault.

"I don't know what exactly happened, but all I know is I felt something came over my eyes, and I panicked and pressed on the gas instead of the brakes," she explained.

Morrison's sister was also injured.

"By the time I opened my eyes, I realised I was heading to a banking and then I remembered quick and fast that my sister was sitting beside me. So I swung the car on my side, so I wouldn't have to hurt my sister badly," she said.

Morrison said the airbags deployed and she had to kick the car door open.

"When I came outside, I fell on the ground. I was bleeding out of my mouth, and I couldn't breathe. My chest did lock up completely," she continued.

Morrison said she and her sister were assisted by two good Samaritans, who took them to the emergency room of the University Hospital of the West Indies.

"Everything came back okay," Morrison reported. "But I have whiplash, and my right elbow is damaged. My chest is bruised badly, and I don't know where my head got hit, but my head back feels like it was hit by a hammer."

UNABLE TO MOVE

Morrison said she is currently unable to move without assistance, bringing a halt to her campaigning efforts.

She was put on sick leave from work and five days bed rest. Regardless, she remains optimistic.

"It will definitely not affect my competition. It happened so good because of Champs, [MKQ] won't keep this week," she said.

"I'll have the other days to get to the studio and get my songs done. If I had to go out there this week, I would go, but I don't know what I would do. If I had to use a wheelchair, I'd go out there."
