Gospel concert lights up Local Gov't month

Celebrations for Local Government and Community Month in St Ann took a spiritual turn recently when the St Ann Municipal Corporation staged a free gospel concert on the grounds of the parish library at Lawrence Park, St Ann's Bay.

The evening of praise and worship included performances in song, dance and instrumental pieces.

Contestants in TVJ's All Together Sing, the Ferncourt High School choir, singer/guitarist, Jovanne 'Jovy' Brown of Trelawny, and the Lawes Sisters were among performers at the event.

DJ Gregory and groups from within the municipality also performed well, so, too, did dancer Italee Vinard, of Brown's Town Community College.

Although the gathering was sparse, the energy level was kept high, aided by excellent MC duties by Ferron Hayden Coburn, who mixed her chairmanship duties with some spirited singing.

Several councillors turned out for the event, including mayor of St Ann's Bay, Michael Belnavis.

Another major activity of Local Government and Community Month was the naming of a youth mayor and junior councillors.

Fourteen junior councillors made presentations during the ceremony at the municipality offices and Britney Gray, a student of St Hilda's Diocesan High School was selected as Youth Mayor 2017/2018, while Vashti Tracey, a student of Bamboo Primary, was nominated as her deputy.

Belnavis said the gospel concert was a fitting way to enhance the celebrations of the month.

On Wednesday, November 29, the Corporation will open a drop-in centre in Ocho Rios for homeless persons.
