Big Pop ventures into bread business

These days, whenever dancehall artiste Big Pop is not in the recording studio or performing on the big stage, he can be found at his small business place on St John's Road in St Catherine.

When THE STAR visited the entertainer at his establishment called Big Pop and Shorty Grotto Bread Shop, it was evident that he needed more manpower as he served up loaves of his bread to schoolchildren and other customers.

"This is how me get me blessings. Saying business is good is really an understatement because me na tell no lie, the ting really take off and a gwan great," he said with a wide grin.

Big Pop was a favourite in the 2012 edition of Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall competition, in which he copped the second-place spot. After the series, he remained active in the recording studios and released tracks like Summa Swag, Time, We Are One and My Friends. Although music is his main focus, the deejay said he always has his eyes on being an entrepreneur, and earlier this year he decided to venture into a small business with his girlfriend.

"My passion is really music but I can't just sit and wait to cash in on it alone. I knew I needed something to back it up, and this is my way. Mi use music and invest inna all a dis. Mi nuh come from John's Road but me always come to a studio over here so when me see the opportunity, me just grab it and it a pay off," he said.

He stated that while persons enjoy the grotto bread by itself, it tastes even better when used as a sandwich with chicken nuggets and cheese.

"A nuh just bread alone me sell but this place is known for the bread and the sandwiches. Me also sell regular grocery items. The studio deh next door so more time you see me a juggle both the music and business at the same time," he said.
