Adding that traditional soul flavour to gospel music, Sashae Evans-Cunningham went from studying the ins and outs of nursing, to holding notes in the hotels as a cabaret singer.

Then she took her talents in front of a church congregation, before taking on the challenge of ministering through music.

“It’s been several years that I have been performing, but later decided that I rather use the gift to spread God’s message,” Evans-Cunningham said.

The St Ann-born Evans-Cunningham found means and ways of utilising her voice to earn income at hotels, but after completing the course to be a certified registered nurse, she was compelled to continue singing – but this time for a cause.

She said, “I retired from singing in hotels on the north coast because I want to be able to touch lives on a deeper level. and even after I obtained my certificate, I don’t know what it was, but having started singing at church, I didn’t want to stop doing God’s work and I won’t stop until my last breath.”

The 24-year-old mother of two has devoted her life to singing the gospel.

She has acquired the support of her family and speaks fondly of the pillar of strength that is her husband, who she says is a firm believer in Christianity and, more so, her talent.

Her music may lean towards the traditional sound but from time to time, she finds herself mixing it up with a little flavour of our local genres or even vocalising in patois.

Through her musical ministry, she has been able to score bookings for religious-themed events and churches across the island. But she admits that an original song release is long overdue.

“I’m not rushing anything; I have about three unreleased songs that I am perfecting before the public gets to hear them,” she said. “Who knows? In the future it may change; but one thing is definite, I want the songs to reflect who I am and give clear meaning.”

Evans-Cunningham is slated to perform tonight at the benefit concert being held for fellow gospel singer Sebastian Braham at the Discovery Bay Tabernacle in St Ann.

She says, it “will be a place of worship and for the patrons to have a good time in God; persons can expect honest ministering from my music.”
