Fans get first look at Shaggy as Sebastian - ABC drops promo for The Little Mermaid Live set to air in less than a month

October 09, 2019

Shaggy's distinct 'boombastic' sound was heard as Sebastian the crab for the first time over the weekend when US television network ABC gave fans a teaser of The Little Mermaid Live. The promo, which was revealed on Sunday, previewed make-up and costuming for characters including Ursula, Chef Louis and, of course, the little mermaid.

It was announced back in August that the multi-Grammy winning artiste was offered the role in the special production that would see him working along with the likes of Queen Latifah, John Stamos, Graham Phillips and Auli'I Cravalho. According to ABC, The Little Mermaid Live! is a "never-before-seen hybrid format that will take viewers on a magical adventure under the sea as live musical performances are interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film."

The production is set to be aired on November 5.

The promo video has been posted to ABC's official Instagram as well as Shaggy's personal page. As they did when the news was first made public this summer, fans of the reggae singer could not contain their excitement. Among the congratulatory comments were statements applauding the network's choice of an authentic Jamaican voice.

"At last a real Jamaican accent," one comment read. "Thank the Lord they chose a Jamaican. Nuh imitation roun yah," another read.

In an interview with The STAR in August, Shaggy said that he was looking forward to bringing life to the character of Sebastian. He revealed that having passed on offers to appear in films before, he accepted the role of Sebastian because he felt he was ready. He credited that preparedness to endless reruns of the animation with his daughters.

"They are young, and I can say we have watched The Little Mermaid over and over again while growing up; between that animation and Frozen, and I know I am ready, and could take on any role," he said at the time.
