Voltyg ringing with musical energy
'Voltage' is defined as an electromotive force or potential difference expressed in volts, but Voltyg is simply a musical energy.
The on-the-rise entertainer, who originally hails from the community of 3 West in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, but currently resides in Connecticut, is hell-bent on making it big in the music industry, and he feels that he is on his way.
With a couple of tunes under his belt, and having already shared the stage overseas with names such as Govana, Jada Kingdom, Squash, TeeJay, I-Waata and Skeng, Voltyg is now working on his EP, while promoting his single titled Problem.
"I do songs for radio and for the streets," he told THE STAR. "I am a singjay and I focus on melody. This song come off, like, a situation with past experience with an ex-girlfriend. It is a situation where a man acknowledge that dem wrong and can mek up for what dem do. Is a real nice tune."
A graduate of Jonathan Grant High School, Voltyg shared that it was while there that his career started to take shape. "Me and my friends took part in clash, and I would sing songs that I wrote in my spare time. I received good reviews from friends and it was very encouraging," he said.
But, it was actually while at Kensington Primary School that his songwriting and the focus on melody had their genesis. As part of the school's choir, he and his peers entered a talent showcase at then Hilton Hotel in New Kingston and dazzled the judges.
"We came first and the prize was 50 desktop computers for the school library," he said, still sounding excited, while giving credit to his single mother and grandparents, who often impressed on him the importance of staying in school and keeping the right company.
He was one of the lead singers at this performance, and winning gave him the confidence to explore not only his own vocal range, but also to try his hands at songwriting.
By the age of 16 he started a street team to help further his career, and Voltyg soon caught the ears of producers who wanted to work with him. He has since worked with Globis Music, No Landing Music and Zigman Records.
In addition to Problem, his other songs include Reign of Blessings, Boss Up, Mind Frame, Do It and Gun Bag.
