Galaxy P still ‘good’ 30 years later
It was in the 1990s that Galaxy P, a then up-and-coming dancehall deejay, hit it big with the single Miss Goodie Goodie featuring singer Colin Roach, and his life was never the same after that.
"In 1992, I come up with a talk that seh 'Miss Goodie Goodie' because that was my contribution to the women. At that time, yuh used to have to show respect. If you pass a woman yuh haffi seh, 'Good morning Miss Auntie', 'Good morning Miss Joyce' and name out everybody," he recalled.
That talk morphed into a song, which Galaxy P says "was bigger than me as an artiste". However, just as important, he said, was the fact that Goodie Goodie, in a twist of fate, helped to buss' out another entertainer who was also searching for a hit song.
"Bounty Killer was at Jammy's at the time searching for a breakout song. Roach did bring me to Jammy's studio and we recorded Goodie Goodie there. At that time, the songs were pressed on vinyl records which had a 'A' side with the actual song and a 'B' side with the riddim. But somebody put Bounty Killer's Copper Shot on the 'B' side and when Goodie Goodie tek off inna foreign, Copper Shot also a tour the world. The selector dem look on the 'B' side and decide to play it to see what this new yute name Bounty Killer ah seh, and dem love it. Bounty hear seh him have a big tune a foreign and that was him buss," Galaxy P recounted.
For the entertainer, who hails from Macca Tree in Spanish Town, St Catherine, the music is like a relay and he feels that the baton is being passed back in his direction right now.
With a new album, which was released last September, The Boy From Macca 3, and a single, Gone in Deh on the iconic Giggy rhythm that is "kicking up rumpus", Galaxy P is savouring the moment.
He is also celebrating a milestone 30 years in the music industry and is happy that he is still blessed with a good voice and his trademark slick lyrics.
"It has been that kind of journey from I was 18 years old at dem times deh till now. And if we can still mek an impact, give even more thanks. The song on the Giggy rhythm is creating a different level of buzz and it will direct people to the album," Galaxy P said.
