Street freestyle sends duo viral
What began as a street freestyle which put two strangers together has garnered attention for up-and-coming dancehall singjay Jordashe I Am and businesswoman Sammie Wammie.
Jordashe I Am, who has been capitalising on the attention, explained that what began as a day of leisure in Mandeville, Manchester, with his friends quickly turned into a viral video after members of the popular OTP Control platform, who have a reputation of recording public freestyles, approached him.
"I said 'ok I know these guys', so I said ok and they asked me to do a girl tune. They then grabbed a Caucasian girl from the crowd and told me to sing to her and I said alright. But what made the video really go viral was her, because she answered me when no one expected her to answer especially because she doesn't even look Jamaican," he said.
"When she dropped the lyrics, the place shell and they posted it and it went boom and went viral," he added.
Following the rapid popularity of the video, Jordashe I Am went into the studio a short time later to record an official song with Sammie Wammie. But he admitted that she was reluctant at first.
"I did not know her before but because of the response in the media, I linked her up and convinced her to do the song because she didn't want to really do it and kept saying that she is not an artiste," he shared.
The song is called Teaser and was released on Monday.
Sammie Wammie told THE WEEKEND STAR that the recording process was nerve-wracking at first, but she soon overcame early jitters to record her verse.
"It was very scary but after I recorded a few lines, it was very exciting and became fun. It was really a learning experience in the studio. I was not very good at it at first but after it I got the hang of it, it became fun," she said.
"I was on my way to a plaza and I saw the OTP guys filming and I know their YouTube channel. So I went to see what was going on and one of them grabbed me by the hand and that was exciting and dragged me in the video and that was quite exciting and funny," she shared.
Sammie Wammie admitted that her quick lines in the freestyle were instinctive as she tried to avoid embarrassment.
"Everyone was watching me, and it was a spur of the moment thing. I am a person who is easily embarrassed and nervous and so I was so embarrassed. So I thought it would be worse if I didn't say anything so I came up with something on the spot," she said.
