Millawno reps for the younger generation
Dancehall artiste Millawno says that his latest single, Rat Bat Settn'z, is a reflection of the mindset adopted by the generation that was born after the year 2000.
"I have been getting great feedback on the song, lots of radio airplay almost every day since it has been released. Rat Bat Settn'z means a lifestyle of the younger generation, anyone under 25; we just want to live life and be free from stress, simple!" Millawno said.
Visuals for the song have also generated thousands of views since its release two months ago and spawned a popular 'rat bat' slang. He said the inspiration came from a beat from his producer, Simpac Music, while they were in the studio "just vibing".
"I just started to freestyle and then after, Simpac said this should be an actual song rather a freestyle version, and we put the lyrics together and constructed it properly on the riddim. Then it was a hit after that," he explained.
Born Jamar Allen, Millawno grew up in Calabar, Trelawny. At a young age, he became a lead singer for his church group and school band. He wrote stories and poems during his teens, and then extended that talent towards songwriting, staying true to his humble beginnings and the real experiences of rural poverty.
"Reality isn't always a tourist ad for Jamaica, " he said.
He has sharpened his skills by performing at community events, but one day wants to show his craft on grander stages.
"I want to deliver an authentic dancehall musical experience for patrons in Jamaica and around the world. This is the time for Millawno to shine," he said.
