Phenique is ready to ‘Bruk Out’
Canada-based dancehall artiste Phenique is upbeat about the response to her latest single, Bruk Out.
The track was released a few weeks ago, racking up thousands of views online and exciting her growing fanbase.
"The response has been amazing. Everyone loves the authentic dancehall flavour that the song brings, and they want more songs like this from me. They are looking forward to hearing it play at parties. Several DJs have also been reaching out to me for this song," Phenique said.
The singjay's management team will be shooting the visuals this month when she arrives in Jamaica, in order to replicate that authentic dancehall energy. A lover of all musical genres, Phenique is not getting pulled into any Afrobeats vs dancehall debate.
"I think they are both highly rhythmic types of music, but I feel like Afrobeats gives a calmer energy, while dancehall is more of a party and high-energy type of vibe. I love both," she said.
In January 2020, Billboard ditched the weekly Reggae Digital Song Sales chart that ranked the top downloaded reggae and dancehall songs in the US. Then in March 2022, Billboard launched the US Afrobeats Songs chart that ranks the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the country.
"Both of them have a space in [the] marketplace, so there is no debate for me," Phenique said.
She is turning her focus towards the release of an EP with In-house Music Production. "There are also plans to do more EPs in the near future as well," she said.
Phenique, given name Shanique Phoenix, grew up in St Catherine but migrated to Canada at the age of 14. In 2021, she decided to pursue her music career and has been diligently honing her skills since that time.
