Capleton sets sights on Grammy
Veteran dancehall star Capleton has two projects submitted for Grammy consideration this year.
The projects are Reggae Diaries Vol. 1 and This is How We Roll. The Reggae Diaries Vol. 1 includes his collaboration, This is How We Roll, alongside Buju Banton and BL The Hook Slaya. The album has been submitted for Best Reggae Album, while the single is vying for Best Global Music Performance.
For Capleton, Grammy submissions are nothing new. The Jah Jah City singer was previously nominated for Best Reggae Album for his solo project, Still Blazing. He also contributed to Damian Marley's Grammy-winning album, Half-Way Tree.
Capleton isn't surprised the album is receiving recognition. He shared, "It's a great album, and having Buju Banton and I collaborate is exciting for fans. The compilation is strong, but I can only speak about my track with Buju. He's very relevant in the US right now with his tour, and our song unites us in that '90s style on a modern dancehall beat."
As for his thoughts on potentially winning another Grammy, Capleton remains grounded. "When I make music, I don't focus on awards like the Grammy. I create music to uplift and empower people. If my peers choose to recognise it, I'm grateful. But there are also other local awards coming up, so it's all good."
This year has been busy and rewarding for Capleton.
"After headlining City Splash in England and closing Reggae Sumfest, I successfully revived my show 'A St Mary Mi Come From'. I've done several shows across the Caribbean and the US, and my next big performance is at Reggae Love Fest at Barclays Centre in New York this November. I'm looking to end the year on a high note -- it's been an exceptional one, and I'm eternally grateful," he said.
