Beenie Man says he won't eat doubles because 'stray dogs do not eat it'
'Di girls dem suga' Beenie Man seems to have left a bitter taste in the mouth of even his diehard fans in Trinidad and Tobago after he said he will not eat doubles because stray dogs won't eat it.
Doubles is a common Trinidadian street food consisting of curried chickpeas served on two fried flatbreads.
The dancehall legend, whose real name is Moses Davis, made the comment while on the Drink Champs podcast with hosts N.O.R.E. (Victor James Santiago Jr) and DJ EFN (Eric Fernando Narciandi), which premiered on Saturday.
The controversial statement came up when the hosts asked Beenie Man a follow-up question of whether he eats doubles, after Beenie Man said that Trinidad was his favourite country besides Jamaica.
“I love Trinidad, but I don’t eat doubles, because dogs don’t eat doubles and I don’t eat anything that dogs don’t eat. I don’t eat doubles,” Beenie Man said.
He then doubled down on his response, "It (doubles) is nice but once I threw it to the dog and the dog didn’t eat it…dogs eat chicken, dogs eat fish, dogs eat dumplings…but the dog won’t eat the doubles.”
Trinidadians have been angered by his statements, with many taking to social media to roast the singer for disrespecting their country's unofficial national dish.
One user on the platform X said "Why would dogs eat doubles?! Chickpeas?!"
Another said, "Which dog did Beenie Man see eat a doubles, I think his dreads are too tight."
Among those who responded was Trinidad's Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister, Dr Amery Browne, who took to Facebook to send his message.
Browne posted a photograph of himself delighting in a hot doubles, eaten on location at a vendor’s stall.
He captioned the photo with an emoji of the country's flag and the words “Sim simma”, quoting the famous line from one of Beenie Man's hit songs Girls Dem Sugar.
