‘WYFL Riddim’ injects fun in dancehall
Disc jockey-turned-producer Jason 'DJ Mac' Mc Dowell says that his dancehall riddim project, WYFL, which was intentionally created to fill a void in "a dark time in music" is one of his most successful works to date.
"I've had other [good projects], but it's my first one that's hitting like this. This kinda beat everything. It's a great, great feeling. This is the first time mi ever feel so accomplished with a project weh mi eva put out, and it work because it a guh international now," DJ Mac told THE STAR.
Already jumping on the beat and adding their international flavour are British rappers Ndotz and Sneakbo and multiplatinum German rapper/singer, Bonez MC. The 25-year-old producer confirmed that all these artistes are "DJ Mac authorised".
Since its official release on November 24, 2025, with dancehall hot topic, Skippa's song, WYFL ( Weh Yuh Feel Like), as the lead track, entertainers Chronic Law, Silk Boss, Nigy Boy, Skeng, and Nhance (featuring Suspense) have dropped their lyrics on the WYFL riddim. DJ Mac said Skippa's song set the tone and inspired the name of the project.
He revealed that it was his intentional, strategic vision to create a "fun and free-spirited" flow during a time when the atmosphere was stifling from the negative effects of a Category Five hurricane and a tense, competitive musical rivalry.
"It was just different from everything going on in dancehall ... everything was war and so dark and trap. Then we had Hurricane Melissa and the place was so sad, suh this kinda just wake up back di place with some happiness. Plus, the riddim just infectious ... everybody can ketch it. It has dancing, partying, everything inna it. If yuh waah sing a gyal song pon it, yuh can, suh it neva just close off to one thing. It was just a big enjoyment fi everybody," said DJ Mac.
Most of the composition was done by his co-producer, CrashDummy, but the arrangement and post-production are his.
"That's my speciality. I like to get the skeleton and just work round [it] and turn it in a full meal. It's not just about record and put out song. Music really base on feeling. Yuh see if it naah feel good, it's just not for me," said the two-times Billboard charting producer.
DJ Mac, who ventured out on this new career path just five years ago, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, said that he always wanted to be more than just a deejay.
"I was always in the studio with other artistes, and even when dem done voice, I was always there because I wanted to be more than a selector. I always wanted to be a part of the conversations with the 'great musicians,'" the producer and founder of Mac Production music label shared.
He proudly wears the moniker of 'Covid-baby producer', but he also dubs himself the 'Leader of the New School'.
"I've seen where music carried great producers such as Stephen Di Genius and others, gave them major accolades, and I feel like I can do that and even better. Mi jus always affi guh hard, do more and keep going because di bingo deh right round di corner. I still don't feel like I bingo the right way I want to bingo outta music as yet," said a confident Mac as he expressed gratitude for the massive support for the WYFL Riddim.
"I'm expanding this project right now on an international basis and closing it off locally. I want to tap into the Latin and US and UK markets and get some remix. That's my vision right now," he shared.
