Chef to get prelim date for murder

A preliminary examination date is to be set in the case against a St James man accused of the April 25, 2015 shooting death of Granville resident Cornel Murray, when the matter will next be mentioned on February 12.

Shou-Wayne Dawes, a trainee chef, is charged with murder. His bail was extended when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The allegations are that on April 21, 2015, Dawes got into a verbal confrontation with Murray, a taxi operator, over taxi fare. During the argument, Dawes boxed Murray in his face and reportedly said, "Remember say you diss me."

It is further alleged that four days later, at about 11 p.m., Murray was approximately 10 kilometres away from his house when he saw Dawes approaching him with a firearm. Explosions were heard and Murray was later found suffering from gunshot wounds, following which he was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on April 30.

On Wednesday, the court was told that the post-mortem report, which had previously been outstanding, was ready and would be collected by the officer later in the week.

Resident Magistrate Sandria Wong-Small subsequently extended Dawes' bail until February 12, at which time a preliminary enquiry date will be set.
