Woman freed of larceny charge

A St James woman who reportedly used her cousin's debit card to withdraw $62,500 without permission managed to avoid jail-time when she appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Shanisha Wright, 20, was facing the court on the charge of simple larceny.

The court was told that between March 23 and April 17, 2015, Wright and a number of other individuals used the complainant's debit card at a number of automated teller machines (ATM) to remove monies amounting to $62,500.

Wright was eventually arrested and charged after photographs were shown to the police that depicted her and the other individuals conducting the transactions with the card.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Wright had repaid the money to her cousin, and as such the complainant wished to put an end to the matter. As a result, a no-evidence motion was made by the prosecution.

Before the case was concluded, Resident Magistrate Sandria Wong-Small gave the defendant a word of caution.

"Your cousin has indicated that she is not interested in proceeding with this matter. Do not come back here, ma'am," RM Wong-Small told Wright, before allowing her to leave the courtroom.
