No arrests in murder of mother, son

Up to late last night, the police were yet to make an arrest in yesterday's early morning murder of a mother and her 12-year-old son in Tucker, St James, however, they say they are following strong leads.

Reports are that about 3 a.m. Devontae Haughton and his 49-year-old mother, Yvette McLean, were at home with other family members, when gunmen kicked open the door and opened fire, hitting the mother and son. Both were pronounced dead at hospital. The other occupants of the house escaped unharmed.

reprisal

Assistant Commissioner in charge of Area One, Winchroy Budhoo, theorised that the incident was the result of an ongoing feud between rival groups in the area, however, he said the victims were not the intended targets.

"There was a previous murder in the area about two weeks ago, and intelligence tells us that the incident that took place this morning [yesterday] was a reprisal for that murder," he explained. "We theorise that they [gunmen] just kicked off the door and opened fire because clearly, they couldn't intend to shoot a 12-year-old boy. I don't think they were the targets."

When pressed about the identity of suspects, Budhoo noted that the incident is a very sensitive one, and so was tight-lipped about those details. He said investigations are ongoing.
