Two Jamaicans held for robbery in Cayman

Two undocumented Jamaican nationals were remanded in a Cayman Island court on Monday when they appeared to answer to charges of robbing a money transfer business in Bodden Town earlier this month.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the Royal Cayman Islands police detectives confirmed that the Jamaicans in question were being harboured at a local address.

According to www.caymancompass.com, the two robbery suspects appeared in Summary Court on Monday morning and were identified as Paul Martin, 28, and Romario Codner, 21.

Both men’s cases were transferred to grand court due to the seriousness of the robbery offence.

Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn ordered the two men remanded in custody without bail because neither man "had a lawful basis for being on island."

THE STAR gathered that the two men were charged with robbery in connection with an August 12 heist that occurred at DND Accessories & Things in Savannah.

Our news team understands that CI$2,136 (J$331,614) was taken during the 8 p.m. robbery at the money transfer business.

Both men were also charged with possession of an imitation firearm, an offence that carries a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence upon conviction in the Cayman Islands.

They will appear in a grand court on September 16 at which time they will be able to enter a plea.

The two men were arrested after extensive police searches last Friday morning in the Bodden Town area.

Police confirmed the two robbery suspects were in Cayman illegally, but could not state exactly when they arrived.

It is believed that the men arrived in Cayman by watercraft.
