Girl dies in house fire

A little girl perished in a fire that destroyed her home in Job Lane, Spanish Town  yesterday morning leaving a community in shock and disbelief.
She has been identified as Amelia Williams of Friendship Primary School.
Her remains were found during cooling down operations carried out by fire fighters who were summoned to the scene about 6:25am.

Reports are that the child was in the care of her aunt who was at work when the fire began.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Residents say they heard cries of "fire" at about 5:50 a.m. and checks found the dwelling ablaze.

"My God, cold sweat a tek mi as mi tink bout it mi general. The likkle one was very bright and intelligent. My God is really a sad incident," a resident said.
Meanwhile councillor for the area, Theresa Turner, said the incident has touched the community.

"All lives are valuable, but when the tragedy touches a child, it is really heartfelt as you know that she could be anything she wants but for this tragedy," Turner said.

She said she would be doing all that she can through the St Catherine Municipal Corporation Poor Relief department.
THE WEEKEND STAR understands that three other persons escaped the blaze.

At least six children have died in fires since the start of the year.

Three children were burnt to death in a fire that gutted a house in the community of Cockburn Gardens, Kingston 13 on Saturday.

Two children in state care also perished in a fire at the Walker's Place of Safety on Lyndhurst Crescent in Kingston on January 16.

Investigations in all three incidents are reportedly ongoing.
