Woman battling brain tumour longs for normal life
Last January, Susan White started suffering from excruciating headaches, nosebleeds, occasional blackouts that lasted for hours and seizures.
Frightened, she got curious about her health, and after tests, found out that she had a brain tumour, which required immediate treatment.
White detailed that her illness is linked to gene defects that she inherited from her mother. She only found this out recently.
"I started developing tumours like September of 2019 and the first one I developed was in my chest cavity. At the time I didn't know anything about gene defect but I was fine because I wasn't feeling any pain or such," she said. "This brain tumour though is making me very ill and I just want to get rid of it so I can at least have my normal life back because it is really hard now trying to stay upbeat and put the best outside."
The 23-year-old was comfortably paying for her treatments up until October. She lost her job as a customer service representative at a company in Maryland, USA.
"I lost my job because of COVID and everything because the company started moving people around," she said. "I had savings but the treatments are very expensive. I had to still be paying rent and bills so I ended up spending all my money."
Each round of treatment lasts for six weeks, and she is expected to pay US$2,000 for an injection every week. However, she was on her last round but couldn't continue.
"When I calculate everything it is US$14,000 for the six weeks and I get one treatment," she said. The Manchester, Jamaica, native said that she is hoping to get another job to complete payment for her treatments or to raise the funds via a GoFundMe account that was launched.
"I should have gotten back on the treatments since last December so now I'm just hoping to get the money to start again. I wasn't thinking I was going to lose my job so I didn't have that source of income and I had already depleted my savings," she told THE STAR. "I don't have anyone who I can depend on like that either. I have my dad but he has other things dealing with as well so I have to fight on my own."
