Man sentenced last week arrested again

A Kingston man who was warned by Senior Parish Court Judge Chester Crooks last Friday to steer clear from trouble found himself before the courts yesterday answering to charges that he breached the Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA).

Steve Junior Elliot pleaded guilty to not wearing a mask and being armed with an offensive weapon when he was brought to the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

The court heard that police were on beat duty in the area of North Odeon Avenue in Half-Way Tree yesterday, when Elliot was seen without a mask. Elliot, who the police say is known to them, was told that he was in breach of the DRMA and was subsequently searched. A knife was found.

However, the police informed Senior Parish Judge Lori-Ann Cole-Montague yesterday that he was sentenced on Friday and was warned by Crooks to stay out of trouble. They did not specify the charges.

"Is it true that you were in court on Friday last week?" the senior judge asked. "Yes, Your Honour," he responded, holding his head low.

"And my brother bound you over to be on good behaviour and then this week you are on bad behaviour. I know that my brother has a strong voice, [so] I have to honour my brother," Cole-Montague said.

For not wearing a mask, Elliot was ordered to pay a fine of $40,000 or face six months' imprisonment. For being armed with an offensive weapon, he is to serve 15 days in prison.
