Two killed in alleged shootout with cops
On Monday, 23-year-old Richard Davidson and his friend Javon Davy, 17, were in high spirits as they danced in their Riverton Meadows community.
The duo reportedly attracted a small audience who laughed and cheered them on, but hours later, laughter was replaced with screams as the men were fatally shot by cops. According to reports from the Hunts Bay police, about 10:50 p.m., the police were on patrol in a section of the community when they came under gunfire. The police reportedly took evasive action and the fire was returned. During a search of the area, the two males were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were assisted to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The police reportedly recovered a Taurus x5 9mm pistol and a Browning single action pistol, which had the serial number partially erased. But residents refuted the police's claims of a shootout.
"See di underpants there, is bathe mi family a go bathe and dem draw out di youth dem and kill dem. If mi family was a gunman mi would be wicked to be out here a cry out. Dem out here a dance and all evening and happy and police come kill dem and run we in like dogs," a relative of Davidson said. She said that it was about 20 minutes after she heard the shots that she found out Davidson and Davy were killed.
"When mi go look pon [his] body this morning a Tranquillity [Funeral Home] and see how him slim and dem full up him little body a shot, it hurt mi heart man," she said. The woman stated that Davidson was a pig farmer but fled the community because of violence. She stated that he would often return to check on the animals and visit his family and friends.
"The war did hot up here 'bout three, four years ago with some guys weh him par wid and everybody did haffi run way. Him did go away to but him come and go. Him never inna nuh badness at all. It nuh easy fi bury dead. Is yesterday [Monday] mi see [him] a dance ... but mi never get fi talk to him," she said.
According to other residents, they were chased back inside their premises by the police after the shooting.
"We never know a who get shot, in fact when we hear di shot dem, we never know if a police or gunman. A one set a shot fire. It wasn't a shootout. As we a come out fi see a what happen, dem tell we bare bad word and run we back in. A peep mi peep and see dem a drag out di youth dem out of a yard and just dash dem in di van. Not a shootout never gwan," the resident said.
