Education Minister Fayval Williams says there is an abundance of quality teachers in the system. The minister made the comment in an address to the nation yesterday.

"We know that there may be some lingering unease about the number of teachers who have left the system. But I want to assure Jamaicans that there are enough high-quality teachers available to support the teaching and learning process at the highest standards," Williams said.

Up to August 16, the ministry had reported 427 resignations. Williams said that the number of resignations represents a 44 per cent decline, compared to the 1,538 teachers who resigned from the public school system for the similar period last year.

Despite the issue of teacher resignation casting a shadow over the sector, Williams said she feels as a "sense of excitement about the incredible journey that lies ahead in our education sector".

"We are ready to empower our students for success in an ever-evolving world. Health and safety remain paramount," Williams said.

She told students that the education transformation journey is designed specifically for them, adding, "We are creating an environment where innovation and creativity thrive; where learning extends beyond textbooks to encompass the world around you.

"The skills you gain today will shape the future of Jamaica. We're here to support you every step of the way," Williams said.

At the same time, she reminded parents that their involvement is of critical importance to their children's success. "We encourage you to stay engaged, communicate openly and support your children's pursuits," the minister said.
