Accused in assault case to be sentenced
A man who earlier this month confessed to beating a 29-year-old woman he said was his girlfriend of five years, was remanded in custody for another month on Tuesday, pending sentencing.
Delroy Knight, 52, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, threat to kill and stone-throwing in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on October 10. According to police reports, Knight assaulted and threatened the complainant and also threw stones that hit her in her stomach.
According to Knight, he injured the woman following an argument about a $250,000 loan.
"We were in love, I fall in love with her and she was in love with me. We were together since 2018 until 2023. I lent her $250,000 and a likkle ting go down," Knight said on the last court hearing.
But when the complainant appeared in court on Tuesday, she was adamant that she was not romantically involved with Knight.
"We were not together, Your Honour. He is someone I have known for about four years, just in passing," the complainant informed Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque.
The complainant, who said she sustained injuries to her face, arms, chest and ribs, told the senior jurist that she was not seeking compensation.
"I am afraid for my life because he threatens to kill me and my mom," the complainant noted further.
Knight was then remanded in custody until November 24, when it is expected that he will be sentenced.
