Child allegedly beaten with slippers

The quick thinking of the headmistress at a Corporate Area basic school, resulted in criminal proceedings being brought against a 32-year-old woman, whom investigators contend beat her child with slippers and sent him to school.

The principal noted that the child, who is three years old, had a swollen face and neck. Further examination showed bruises on his chest and upper body region. It was shared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court that the police were called to attend the school, where the child's injuries were observed and recorded.

The mother, who has since been charged and arraigned for cruelty to child, is alleged to have slapped the child with her footwear, while preparing him for school. She has not yet entered a plea and a social enquiry report was requested to assist in sentencing.

The matter was adjourned until January 25, 2024.
