A section of Grants Pen Road in St Andrew will be closed to vehicular traffic between Thursday and August 31.

The National Works Agency (NWA) says the closure, which will be between Fagan Avenue and Shortwood Road, is to facilitate the rehabilitation of that section of roadway.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the roadway, which features a ford, has deteriorated in recent times due to water carried on the wheels of motor vehicles.

He explains that the road has a combination of asphaltic concrete and a rigid concrete pavement, but the section with the asphaltic concrete has significantly deteriorated and is badly rutted.

Shaw says the project, which will last for four months, will see the rigid concrete section being extended to reduce the impact of water from the drain on the road.

He discloses that the repairs, valued at $18.1 million, will also include the construction of kerb and channel, sidewalks and approximately 600 square metres of hot mix patching.

The NWA warns that motorists should not attempt to use the area during the period of the closure.

It says alternative routes include Shortwood Road, Charlton Road and Charlton Avenue.
